Pakistan Scientific & Technological Information Centre (PASTIC), Pakistan Science Foundation, Ministry of Science & Technology, in collaboration with HEJ, International Centre for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS), University of Karachi organized a one-day Workshop on “Patent Protection for R&D” on February 01, 2012 at the HEJ Research Institute of Chemistry, University of Karachi. Prof. Dr. Manzoor Soomro, Chairman Pakistan Science Foundation (PSF) Islamabad was the Chief Guest, Prof. Dr. Iqbal Choudhary, Director, HEJ, ICCBS was Guest of Honour and Mr. Faisal Mubeen, Chief Operating Officer, Shan Foods (Private) Ltd was invited Guest.
The aim of the seminar was to create awareness about patenting of research amongst scientists, entrepreneurs and the SMEs and to deliberate on the importance of patents and their benefits in economic development. Expert speakers were invited from the private sector, PASTIC, PCSIR, HEJ, Law Firm, etc. About 45 participants representing, academia, industry, R&D organizations and the legal profession attended the Seminar.
Prof. Dr. Manzoor Soomro, Chairman, (PSF) said that patents are an important tool in technological development and help in innovative activity. He briefly described the activities of PSF and the new initiatives of PSF and PASTIC. Prof. Dr. Muhammad Iqbal Choudhary, Director HEJ / ICCBS spoke about quality research, and appreciated the efforts of PASTIC in organizing the event. A Welcome address was given by Dr. Mussharaf of HEJ, while introductory remarks were given by Ms. Nageen Ainuddin, Director, PASTIC. Mr. Faisal Mobeen from Shaan Foods also spoke about the company and its IP policy. Mr. Toseef Haider gave an introduction about the patents and IPR.
