The Pakistan Scientific and Technological Information Centre (PASTIC) is the national organisation responsible for meeting the scientific and technological information needs of Pakistan’s research, development and industrial community. The National Scientists Directory is one of its services.

Our history

Recognising the part information plays in scientific, technological and economic development, the Government of Pakistan established the Pakistan National Scientific and Technical Documentation Centre (PANSDOC) in 1957 with the assistance of UNESCO, under the Pakistan Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (PCSIR) in Karachi. The centre served the scientific community by procuring documents and compiling bibliographies, abstracts, indexes and technical translations.

In 1974 an expanded project, the Pakistan Scientific and Technological Information Centre, was launched around the nucleus of PANSDOC, and was later transferred from PCSIR to the Pakistan Science Foundation in Islamabad. PASTIC today functions as a subsidiary of the Pakistan Science Foundation, an autonomous organisation under the Ministry of Science and Technology.

Our objectives

  1. Develop a National S&T/R&D Information Repository of indigenous information resources (databases).
  2. Disseminate S&T/R&D information through contemporary information services and tools.
  3. Strengthen the National Science Reference Library through resource sharing, inter-library collaboration and the empowerment of information professionals.
  4. Promote R&D based industrial development.
  5. Develop collaborations with national and international information networks.
  6. Facilitate the printing of S&T/R&D publications.
  7. Build the capacity and skills of researchers and entrepreneurs.

What PASTIC provides

PASTIC serves researchers and professionals through specialised information services, including full-text S&T documents, primary and secondary journals, patent information, bibliographic services, indigenous S&T databases, union catalogues and directories, the National Science Reference Library, and reprographic and printing facilities.

The National Scientists Directory is a PASTIC service that maintains a national register of Pakistan’s scientists and researchers. Registered scientists record their qualifications, affiliation, publications, patents, books and projects in a single verified profile, making national expertise easier to find for academia, industry, funding agencies and government.
